Salemba,
The massive use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in various fields raises intriguing questions. How are humans relevant amidst the onslaught of AI that not only brings convenience, but also risks and threats? The Academic Division of the University of Indonesia Communication Science Graduate Student Association (Himpaskom UI) 3.0 seeks to hone students’ sensitivity about the issue through a Communication Talk event entitled “Digital Dilemma 4 Book Discussion – AI and Human Dilemma” on Friday, August 30, 2024 at the IASTH Building, UI Salemba Campus. The discussion, hosted by Nadya Realtya, presented the author of the book, Firman Kurniawan Sujono; Ken Yunita, CEO of Urbanasia.com; and Oktamandjaya Wiguna, UI Communication Graduate Student and Editor of “Digital Dilemma 4”.
In three sessions lasting two hours, participants were invited to view AI through two perspectives, namely optimistic and pessimistic. In the first session, Firman focused on explaining the contents of the book which highlighted how the benefits and productivity of AI have the potential to deceive humans. The efficiency of work offered by AI can not only replace the role of humans, but also put humans in a vulnerable position due to constantsurveillance. Human authenticity also needs to be redefined as AI makes it difficult to differentiate between real people and their duplicates.
“AI makes work more efficient and perfect, but you are being watched constantly and you will be personalized. AI can read our needs so that marketers can make the right marketing, so that it benefits them. Surveillance society,” Firman Kurniawan Sujono.
Agreeing with Firman, Ken cited the inability of young people to read analog clocks as evidence that AI is dumbing down the human brain. In the realm of digital journalism, he admitted that AI can cut the number of human resources to find ideas and themes, create content planning, edit videos, transcribe interviews, write articles, and find out consumer needs. But on the other hand, editors are required to be more observant in identifying hoaxes and verifying the truth of information in articles written by AI. Media also still have to deploy human labor to the field to find information-something that is difficult for AI to do. This shows that the role of humans is not completely lost amidst the use of AI.
“To maintain quality, we don’t just copy and paste. We will see and discuss again and adjust the language style and verification as well. We can‘t fight technology, so what we want to do is adapt,” Ken Yunita.
The book “Digital Dilemma 4”, written from a dystopian perspective, sparked Ken’s awareness as a woman about the weaknesses of AI that was created to solve women’s problems. “AI is made by men. When it’s made by men, the point of view is for men. So, again colonizing. None of this will solve the problem,” she said.
Okta said that the actual cases included in each chapter in this book make it easier for readers to understand the perspectives that can be used to examine the issues discussed. “It is useful for students. It’s hard for students to find theories. Reading Firman’s book, we know that this problem can be studied with what theories and perspectives,” he said.
The book review was made even livelier by the questions raised by the participants in the question-and-answer session. As an appreciation, the three questioners received gifts in the form of previous editions of the book “Digital Dilemma” which were handed over directly in turn by the author, Firman Kurniawan and the Chairperson of Himpaskom UI 3.0, Hetty Mery Marbun. The event was closed with a photo session with the performers, participants, and members of Himpaskom UI. (SAC)
