Dissertation Title and Research Objectives

In his dissertation entitled “Communication Ethics of Knowledge Production (Phenomenological Study of Practice on Ethical Modalities based on Academics’ Experience in Scientific Writing)”, Bonifacius Hendar Putranto formulated a framework of communication ethics of knowledge production based on the direct experience of academics in writing scientific papers. His dissertation uses ethical phenomenology with information ethics into a phenomenological and praxis model of communication ethics. Phenomenological reflection on the distribution of cultural tensions, moral-ethical dilemmas, administrative techniques, and ontologies aims to develop a basic model of knowledge production communication ethics as a specific applied ethics. Unfortunately, applied ethics discourses that pivot on digital ethics, information ethics, and communication ethics are often rooted in individualistic Western values, which are less compatible with Indonesia’s cultural diversity and do not elevate the importance of concrete, local, and contextual individual life experiences as sources of knowledge.

Three Basic Attitudes in Communication Ethics

In conclusion, Bonifacius Hendar Putranto’s research led to the discovery of three fundamental attitudes in the communication ethics of knowledge production, namely natural, phenomenological and ethical attitudes. The natural attitude is the pre-reflective way humans perceive the world, assumed to be real without critical questioning. The phenomenological attitude is a deep reflection achieved by questioning the basic assumptions of the natural attitude and involves epoché (suspension of assumptions) and phenomenological reduction, which is a filter to see phenomena less biased. Then, the ethical stance in phenomenology is a synthesis of the thoughts of Loidolt (2012), de Warren (2017), and Ferrarello (2020), which highlight the ethical experience of the self in relation to the Other. These three fundamental stances form the foundation of three main themes, namely liminality (the transition of attention from private to public space), ambiguity (the dilemma between individual and collective interests), and identity (self-construction as an academic). The dissertation by Bonifacius Hendar Putranto offers a theoretical and practical framework in the development of communication ethics in scientific writing rooted in the lived experiences of academics.
