Raden Ayu Wulantari’s dissertation entitled “Green Identity in Clothing Swap Practice : A Case Study on Sustainable Communication” aims to understand green identity constructed through symbolic interactions in a community ecosystem called Bersaling Silang. The community is a clothing swap community that is active in social media and offline spaces in Indonesia.
Green identities are shaped through negotiation of meaning and social validation, both online and offline.
From the research by Raden Ayu Wulantari, it was found that individual green identities are formed through negotiation of meaning, symbol exchange, and social validation both online and offline, regardless of the intensity of community membership. In addition, social media acts as a mediating space that strengthens solidarity, identity validation, and consistency of sustainability behavior, although there remains tension between sustainability ideals and practices. Ultimately, this study expands the understanding of symbolic interaction, community, and social media on sustainable lifestyle transformation in Indonesia. In addition, this study also contributes to the development of ecological identity studies in Communication Science. (FYG)
