The Communication Science Doctoral Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia, held a Doctoral Promotion session on Wednesday, December 3, 2025. On this occasion, Nur Latifah Umi Satiti defended her dissertation entitled “Reproducing the Ecosystem of Masculine Power Discourse: Muslim Women’s Public Participation in the AILA Women’s Movement.” The promotion session went smoothly and Nur Latifah became the 158th Doctor of Communication Science at FISIP UI. <\/p>\n

The session, which took place at the Juwono Sudarsono Auditorium, FISIP UI Depok Campus, was held in a hybrid manner. The promotion session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Dody Prayogo, MPSt, while the promovendus was guided by Endah Triastuti, Ph.D. as promoter, and Prof. Dr. Donna Asteria as copromoter. The board of examiners consisted of academics and experts such as Rachel Rinaldo, Ph.D, Prof. Manneke Budiman, Ph.D, Prof. Dr. Billy K. Sarwono, Dr. Camelia Catharina, and Dr. Indah S. Pratidina. <\/p>\n

Nur Latifah’s dissertation examines in depth how the discourse of patriarchal hegemony is reproduced and maintained by Muslim women in the women’s movement AILA (Aliansi Cinta Keluarga Indonesia). “This research departs from my anxiety about the emergence of issues from the women’s movement in digital media that are contrary to the narrative of gender justice,” Nur Latifah said in her scientific oration. <\/p>\n

Nur Latifah’s research reveals how the AILA organization builds a counter-discourse to feminism and the dominant Western sciences. The counter-discourse affirms narratives that marginalize women and limit women to their domestic functions. “Narratives of masculinity are supported by academic figures and organizations that have the capital to print books, modules, or create courses,” Nur Latifah explained. <\/p>\n

Through this digital ethnographic research, she shows that women are not only victims of patriarchal discourse, but also actors who expand the dominant narrative. She reveals this from the findings that show how women in AILA use narratives of masculinity as capital to achieve important positions in the organization. <\/p>\n

Nur Latifah hopes that her research can provide awareness to the public and policy makers about the risk of silencing women’s voices, especially through the reproduction of patriarchal discourse from dominant groups. “Groups with capital and access to media have the power to control the truth and influence those who cannot speak out,” Nur Latifah concluded.
