The phenomenon of urban toys as part of popular culture is now not only seen as an expression of subcultural art, but also an arena of attraction between community values and market logic. This is one of the important ideas presented by Rani Chandra Oktaviani in her doctoral promotion session which took place at the Juwono Sudarsono Auditorium, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia (FISIP UI) through a dissertation entitled “Subcultural Capital and Commercialization in the Advanced Neoliberal Era: A Multi Case Study of the Urban Toys Scene in Indonesia.” The promotion session held on January 6, 2026 was chaired by Prof. Dr. Fredy B. L. Tobing with promoter Prof. Dr. Donna Asteria, M.Hum. and co-promoter Dr. Niken Febrina Ernungtyas, M.Si. Acting as examiners were Dr. Haryatmoko, M.A., Dr. Lucia Ratih Kusumadewi, DEA, Endah Triastuti, Ph.D., Dr. Indah Santi Pratidina, M.Soc.Sci., and Dr. Camelia Catharina, M.Si.<\/p>\n

In her doctoral promotion session, Rani said that the urban toys community in Indonesia has undergone a transformation due to the influence of advanced neoliberal culture. She emphasized that in this scene, the creativity and originality of urban toys activists are often reframed through the lens of market economy. Rani revealed how the urban toys community, which initially started from the spirit of creative expression and resistance, became part of a broader market logic. <\/p>\n

Rani’s research uses a qualitative approach with a multi-case study design covering various urban toys communities in Indonesia. Her findings show that subcultures do not completely disappear or get co-opted, but undergo a process of adaptation through symbolic mediation and personal branding strategies. Digital media plays a major role in this process, not only as a means of distribution, but also an arena for identity construction. “Digital channels open up a space of visibility as well as a field of value negotiation because urban toys activists must negotiate their position as artists as well as creative business actors,” added Rani. <\/p>\n

This research also enriches our understanding of the dynamics of subcultural capital in the post-subculture era. As the boundaries between community and market are increasingly blurred, creative cultural actors not only maintain authenticity, but also actively build credibility through networking, collaboration and self-imaging in the digital space. <\/p>\n

Rani Chandra Oktaviani graduated with a very satisfying predicate and became the 162nd doctor of Communication Science and at the same time the 85th female doctor from the University of Indonesia Postgraduate Program in Communication Science.
