DEPOK – On Friday, July 21, 2023, the Doctoral Promotion Session of the Communication Science Postgraduate Program at the University of Indonesia was held at the Juwono Sudarsono Auditorium (AJS), Building F 2nd Floor, FISIP UI Campus, Depok. Devi Tri Indriasari is one of the UI Communication Science Doctoral Program students who took part in the trial in the Even Semester 2022/2023. Devi Tri Indriasari successfully completed her dissertation research entitled “Freedom of Expression under Regulatory Pressure: A Study of the Electronic Information and Transaction Law (ITE Law)”.
In the Doctoral Promotion Session, Devi Tri Indriasari said that her research aims to show how public space, which is an ideal requirement in democracy, is paralyzed by the presence of the ITE Law which contains articles that threaten freedom of expression. Freedom of expression and opinion are vital elements in a democracy. The conclusion that can be drawn from this research is that the process of formulating and revising the ITE Law is far from the deliberative democracy model, which is the strategy of individuals in society as citizens to communicate that can influence the decision-making process in a political system. As a result, the ITE Law has distorted the public sphere by inhibiting freedom of expression so that this law has carried out what Habermas also called the colonization of the public sphere.
This doctoral session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Semiarto Purwanto as the Dean of FISIP UI. The promoter in today’s doctoral session is Dr. Ade Armando, M.Sc and the copromoter is Dr. Eriyanto, S.I.P., M.Si. The examiners who attended the session included Dr. Udi Rusadi, Dr. Agus Sudibyo, Dr. Donna Asteria, S.Sos., M.Hum., Dr. Irwansyah, and Dr. Indah Santi Pratidina, S.Sos., M.Soc.Sci., who replaced Dr. Pinckey Tri Putra as examiner. In addition, family, colleagues, and from Devi Tri Indriasari also attended the promotion hearing and provided support.
After Devi Tri Indriasari explained the results of her dissertation and answered the Examiners’ questions, the entire Examination Team expressed their appreciation and pride for the dissertation that had been completed. With the end of this doctoral promotion session, Devi Tri Indriasari has the right to hold a doctoral degree in communication science.
