Armed with organizational experience and qualified skills, Happy Goeritman, an alumnus of the UI Postgraduate of Communication Science and a famous news presenter who graduated from TVRI managed to pursue his
passion
-in the world of journalism.

Familiarly called Happy, he admitted that he started his interest in journalism since high school. Having been active as a board member of the School Magazine extracurricular program, Happy recounts the beginning of her involvement in journalism. After graduating from high school, Happy continued his undergraduate education in Dutch Literature, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) UI. During his undergraduate studies, Happy got to know more about the world of journalism through his activity in the BO Press Suara Mahasiswa (SUMA) organization. Through the organization, Happy gained experience as an administrator and reporter.

After graduating from her undergraduate education, Happy’s dream to work in a media company as a reporter was delayed because she worked at the Dutch School as a Dutch teacher assitant.

. For 1.5 years, Happy felt like going back to the passion initially and signed up with several TV media companies. After a long wait, finally in 2012 Happy managed to enter the TVRI station and began his career in journalism as a reporter, news presenter and finally became a producer.

Due to his growing career, in 2020 Happy decided to continue his master’s education at the UI Postgraduate Communication Science. “To be linear with background Education. I think working as a journalist also requires understanding Communication Science, especially about media convergence and the development of digital technology,” Happy explained. While studying at the UI Graduate School of Communication, Happy majored in Communication Management. One of her favorites is the Crisis Communication Management course, “in the practice of journalism, we need to understand how to communicate in times of crisis, from the media to the public or between the media and stakeholders,” she added.

With a background in the pandemic situation and as a journalist, Happy highlighted the government’s communication at the beginning of the pandemic, which he felt lacked transparency, causing stigmatization issues. Due to her interest in the topic, Happy wrote her thesis entitled “Cultural Factors in the Construction of Risk Messages in Crisis Communication of the Covid-19 Handling Task Force.” Happy examines how the government builds crisis communication and shapes types of risk messages as a form of handling in times of crisis. By interviewing the Spokesperson of the Covid-19 Task Force Team, Happy’s research found that public communication carried out during a crisis cannot be equated with ordinary PR strategies and takes into account more cultural factors.

Happy completed his studies at the UI Postgraduate Program in Communication Science in 2021 cum laude. “This master’s experience is enough to shape my new way of thinking, always based on dataSo it’s easier to make journalistic products because you’re used to researching and shaping paradigms, choosing perspectives, looking for critical gaps, and it feels more qualified,” said Happy. At the end of the speech, Happy advised that in an age that is developing very fast and rapidly, competition is getting fierce, so try to get the highest education possible to find knowledge that will support a quality career and life.
